Purpose of the Center:

Pursuant to Article 7/d-2 of Higher Education Law No. 2547, as amended by Law No. 2880, and in accordance with the decision taken at the Executive Board meeting of the Council of Higher Education dated 04/08/1999, the İznik Earthquake Damage Mitigation Research and Application Center was transformed into a service center affiliated with the Directorate of Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as the “Center”). The Center was established with the aim of conducting temporary or permanent observations and scientific research in various disciplines of geosciences, and of disseminating the results obtained to the scientific community and for public benefit.


Functions of the Center:


The duties of the Center, in line with the purpose stated above, are as follows:

a) To provide all necessary logistical support to ensure the efficient and uninterrupted operation of observations carried out at stations established within the framework of ongoing national and international projects in İznik and its surrounding areas;
b) To employ technically equipped personnel to carry out emergency interventions in the event of malfunctions at observation stations located in the western segment of the North Anatolian Fault Zone, as well as to conduct planned field operations;
c) To ensure the modernization and upgrading of instrumental equipment in line with technological advancements;
d) To contribute to projects and studies jointly conducted by Boğaziçi University in collaboration with relevant national and international institutions, in order to enable more detailed geoscientific investigations of the region;
e) To support the organization of national and international meetings in accordance with scientific objectives;
f) To implement the annual work programs envisaged by the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute.
